On June 2, 2007, Arab Americans performed 18 projects in 15 cities,
stepping up in local communities across the country in the name
of service. The third annual National Arab American Service Day
united volunteers from diverse backgrounds and put a compassionate
face on the work Arab Americans continue to do outside of their
own communities. Take a look at some of the service projects NNAAC
members and participating organizations carried out in the community.
ACCESS-Dearborn, MI
Over 200 volunteers from the Metro-Detroit area joined the City
of Hamtramck, to clean up Veteran's Park, paint and plant flowers
along Joseph Campau, the city's central business district.
Arab Cultural Center -San Francisco, CA
Community volunteers with the Arab Cultural and Community Center,
gathered at the San Francisco Food bank Warehouse. Volunteers
boxed up food for families in Orange County and held a discussion
about poverty and hunger.
Arab-American Family Services-Burbank,
IL
Outside of Chicago, over 30 volunteers with the Arab American
Family Services gathered at World Vision, a warehouse of building
materials that are given to low income families.
Arab American Action Network-Chicago, IL
At another Chicago site, the Arab American Action Network provided
20 volunteers to clean and restore a local nursing home, working
with youth from local schools.
The Arab-American Community Center -Orlando,
FL
93 volunteers from the Arab American Community Center partnered
with the Ismaili Group to work with the Ronald McDonald House,
an organization that provides a home away from home for families
with seriously ill children. Volunteers also worked with the Second
Harvest Food Bank and Green Up.
The Arab American Cultural and Community
Center -Houston, TX
10 volunteers from the Arab American Community and Cultural Center
volunteered at Project Cure packing medical supplies to ship nationally
and internationally.
Greater Lansing Arab American Social Services-Lansing,
MI
8 volunteers with the Greater Lansing Arab American Social Services
served in a soup kitchen at Christ Lutheran Church.
The Arab American Family Support Center-Brooklyn,
NY
In partnership with the Green Apple Corp, 20 volunteers turned
out to clean up Prospect Park.
Access California Services-Anaheim, CA
40 volunteers with Access California Services gathered at Huntington
Beach Pier, cleaning up the local waterfront.
Alif Institute-Atlanta, GA
Over 75 volunteers participated with Hands on America in maintaining,
and enhancing sections of Atlanta's largest park Chastain Memorial
Park, which spans more than 260 acres. Volunteers cleared overgrowth,
applied mulch, planted trees and performed general park cleanup.
Philadelphia Arab American Community Development
Corporation Philadelphia, PA
20 volunteers with the Philadelphia Arab-American Community Development
Corporation and NAAP participated in the Philadelphia Cares about
Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center.
Arab American Institute Foundation-Washington,
DC
The Arab American Institute Foundation partnered with NAAP and
the students of WVSART's School for Arts in Learning, a school
for children with special needs. Over 120 people came out for
the event, to clean up a local park and paint a bridge mural.
Arab American Association of New York-Brooklyn,
NY
80 volunteers participated with The Arab American Association
of New York (AAANY) in projects that ran the gamut from a blood
drive and park cleanup in Brooklyn to sorting food at a food pantry
in Manhattan. Volunteers from the AAANY and NAAP also volunteered
at the local Ronald McDonald House.
Arab American Community Center for Economic
and Social Services of Cleveland, OH
AACCESS-Ohio partnered with the Cleveland Christian Home for Children.
Some 40 volunteers worked to clean up the grounds of the children's
foster home.
