 Alwan for the
Arts

Dear Alwan
Community,We need your
support.As you know,
Alwan plays a much-needed role in New York City,
providing the only performance and presentation
space dedicated to showcasing the arts and cultures of
the Middle East. Our mission is all the more
urgent in this difficult political
climate.
It's
almost remarkable that a place like Alwan exists,
intimate, yet universal in scope, allowing artists to
connect with audiences to create big
things.
- Marcel
Khalife
(composer,
musician, UNESCO Artist for Peace) 2010
has been both an exciting and challenging year for
Alwan. We
organized our first international academic conference on
"The Future of Egypt," started a Dance Program and
hosted world-renowned poet Adonis. We
programmed close to 100 events, ranging from film,
music, dance and drama to literary and academic
happenings.
Building on recent successes, we have
ambitious new initiatives planned for
2011: private lessons on Arab instruments, a children's
cultural education program and a short
video slam competition. We're also organizing a Festival
of Sacred Music and commissioning short documentaries on
the immigrant experience for inclusion in our annual
film festival.
There
are precious few spaces like Alwan. It provides an
atmosphere of warmth, focus and a truly unifying
intensity.
-Tony Shalhoub
(actor,
Emmy Award winner, Golden Globe
winner) As
the financial crisis drags on, though, it's
increasingly difficult for small cultural
organizations like ours to continue to thrive.
Your support goes a long way toward sustaining Alwan and
helping implement our plans for the upcoming season and
beyond. Alwan is volunteer-run, so your
tax-deductible gifts of any size contribute directly to
our programming. Your
financial support is crucial and graciously accepted,
but your membership enrollment goes
further. Membership represents a shared
commitment
to Alwan's mission, which strengthens our voice when
advocating for government and private funding on behalf
of Middle Eastern arts and culture.
Thank
you for your support!
With all Best Wishes,
Alwan
