AmeriCorps VISTA: Sundous Daghash

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) members are placed at the National Network for Arab American Communities' (NNAAC) member organizations to develop new programs, recruit volunteers and seek program funding.

Get to know Sundous Daghash, one of our 2016-17 AmeriCorps VISTA members, in our interview with her below!

Sundous Daghash

Arab American Action Network | Chicago, Ill.

Q: Why did you join the VISTA program?

A: I have been involved with the Arab American Action Network since I was a senior in high school and I was (and still am) fascinated with the work that they do. The AAAN helps strengthen the Arab community in the Chicagoland area by building its capacity to be an active agent for positive social change. As a grassroots nonprofit, their strategies include community organizing, advocacy education, providing social services, leadership development, cultural outreach, and forging productive relationships with other communities. I decided to join the VISTA program because nothing is more worthwhile and rewarding to me than working with my community in hopes of strengthening it. And what better organization to do this work with than the AAAN.

Q: How does this program fit into your future plans?

A: As I am currently studying to be a speech language pathologist, this program fits perfectly with my future plans in every way. An SLP works to prevent, evaluate, identify, and treat speech, language, social communication, and cognitive-communication, disorders in both children and adults. The students that I am working with do not have disorders, but do have limited and minimal English language- thus making it difficult for them to become part of the workforce. My job is to break down these barriers and help the students learn the necessary skills to become active members of the community.

Q: Describe yourself in three words.

A: Activist, Student, and Driven.

At each host organization, VISTA members will either develop a new program, or build the reach and scope of an already existing program. VISTA members will be involved in grant writing and fundraising for employment programs, and will recruit a corps of volunteers to continue with the program beyond the VISTA cycle. Click here to learn more.
